Yakima BigHorn 4 Bike Rack Review

I am very pleased with Yakima for creating this rack.We downgraded cars which forced us to have a 1.25" hitch instead of an earlier 2" hitch.Our previous four bike rack was from Reese, which worked very well but was heavy and over built.

Yakima BigHorn 4 is lighter yet very strong.It is the perfect size while supporting four bikes.The assembly instructions were clear.The parts and box were nicely thought out.The bike mounting and straps are as good as any I used.There was not a large selection of four bike hitch racks for 1.25" and I was please Yakima still supported this need.It appears this rack is identical between the 1.25" and 2" hitches with only one part change.Well thought out design.

The only negative and the reason I didn't give it 5 stars relates to a plastic guide when lowering the rack.This plastic guide can pop off and needs to be pushed into placed when lifting the rack in the upright position.I don't anticipate lowering it often and with care it functions fine, but you do need to keep this in mind.

Do note that for 1.25" hitches, you do get more side to side sway compared to a 2" hitch but it is acceptable and the Yakima design is plenty strong enough.

Allen Deluxe 3-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (1.25-Inch Receiver) Review

I got this bike rack a couple of weeks ago and used it for the first time on a pretty long trip this past weekend and it worked great!The rack is easy to assemble out of the box and is also available in a 2 inch receiver if your hitch is slightly larger than the 1.25 inch receiver.

The reviewer below said that the way the rack bolts into the hitch is problematic- I had no problems at all.To secure the bolt all you need is a 9/16 wrench with a ringed end and a socket wrench.On the left side of the bolt hold it in place with the ringed in of the 9/16 and use the socket wrench to tighten the bolt through.Keep doing this until it won't go anymore and jerk on the rack a bit- it is extremely steady and will NOT sway back and forth.The bolt does not come loose either.I did not re-tighten it not once on a 3 hour road trip, though I did check to make sure it was still secure.

The straps are excellent on the hitch and really secure the bike to the frame.I wouldn't have had to to use any extra ropes or ties (though I did just to be safer than sorry in the first time using it).Male bikes load perfectly on the hitch whereas female bikes require a little extra work/positioning.Might want to tie the tires together with some twine just so they won't hit each other on bumps.

So this is the first bike hitch I've ever owned and I really like it.I highly recommend it to anyone who is considering purchasing one.You can't beat the price that Amazon has.These are at least $139-$150 in stores.Amazon gives you free shipping- free 2-3 day shipping if you are an Amazon Prime Member... which is pretty sweet.

Thule 400XTR Aero Rapid Roof Rack Foot Pack (Set of 4) Review

Pros: Looks nice, aerodynamic. Cheaper than Yakima.
Cons: Shoddy quality. Cheaper than Yakima.

Used for 17' fiberglass kayaks.

To carry our touring kayaks, we purchased the Thule Aero system for our Prius, because it was significanly cheaper than the Yakima. To work properly, one needs to purchase the correct Fit Kit for the specific vehicle; this Fit Kit is attached to the foot with a plastic-handled bolt. The metal parts in the bolt handles bent during installation, and the cheap rivet holding one of the handles to its bolt sheared in two. There are plastic tabs in the handles that are supposed to fit into a slot on the Fit Kit parts, but 3 out of 4 tabs snapped off. Fortunately, the locks still manage to hold the handles onto the feet. The supplied measurements didn't work for our Prius, and we had to improvise.

Another disadvantage is that the aerodynamic bars need to be parallel with the ground, which doesn't happen if the vehicle's roof is curved (again, think Prius or VW bug.) This doesn't seem like an issue until the accessories are added to the bars, and they wind up tilted and not parallel front-to-rear. Since this results in only a single point of contact on the boat hull, this puts undue strain on the kayaks as well as the fittings holding the attachments to the bar. In this case, a round bar would work perfectly, as one could rotate the accessories until they're parallel and horizontal, supporting the boat across the entire pad. Due to the poor contact with the cradles, the boats are not secure while in the rack, and easily wobble 12" side-to-side. Plus, the amount of pressure needed on the straps to minimally hold the boat in the cradles deforms the hull. Bow/Stern tiedowns are crucial to avoid highway fly-aways.

We've got a Yakima rack on our pickup truck, and it works like a charm. I regret not purchasing a Yakima rack system for the Prius instead of Thule.

If you have a flat-roof vehicle, like a station wagon or SUV, the Thule Aero system would probably work very well for you. Curved roof, think round bars instead.

I was not sure which type of rooftop carrier to purchase to transport my new kayak.I was expecially concerned because I am 5'4" and have to lift a kayak to the top of a RAV4. Thule 987XT 6-Ski Adapter for Thule Hitch Mount Bike Racks Review

I just fitted this to my 998xt rack. It fits fairly well, and feels pretty secure. It's well made, and comes with all the accessories you'll need.

The downside is that it's impossible to get my shaped skis (Rossi Bandit B3s) into the rack the way they suggest (back to back). They do fit, but less securely, as individual skis. This reduces the capacity to 3 pairs of skis, and not 6.

Also the height of the rack, even with my relatively short skis, is insane - the tops of the skis stand a good 2 feet above the roofline of my SUV.

To be honest.... I wish I'd bought a roof rack, and just stuck with the Thule rack for my bike.

I just want to make this known. I reviewed, and reviewed, and picked this item above others related to cost and description.However, when the product came, located on the bottom corner of the box, was a small symbol, with :"CARRIES ONE BOAT when paired with another set of saddles or rollers" Inside package information says the same.Well looking at the item on this site, there are four attachments pictured, and nowhere does the description read that only two are included, and that you need two more....if you pay attention, another set of saddles or rollers absolutely doubles the price, AND I didn't have time to wait for further shipping. Thule BMW 3-Series Specialty Rack - Locking Review

I bought this for a 2000 BMW 5-Series a year ago and have never regretted it once.Both rack bars fit perfectly and screw in with a single screw.A special Allen wrench is included to lock the screws down.Thieves cannot remove the bars unless they have that special wrench.The feet for the bars are rubber coated to help protect your paint.There are also a couple of washers for each scew that fall off easily when you remove the rack from the car.I lost two already, but found suitable replacements at a hardware store.Overall, a great product.I would not hesitate to buy one.

Yakima Spare Joe 2-Bike Spare Tire Mount Rack Review

I bought the spare Joe last august and i've used it many times since and I can say i'm 90% satisfied considering that there are no other options but to get a roof rack and look as if you are racing in tour-de-france(which is silly for me if i'm going to bike 10 miles from my home).

The problems i faced are similar to the person who posted earlier with a rav4. There is a vital strip that has to pass between the tire and the back door to secure the whole thing to the tire. This takes time as there is a metal bracket behind the tire.But after u get used to it (you need patience, because you are trying to pass a strip through a small hole)it works fine. Again, the strip can pass behind the tire but it takes like 1-2 minutes to get it through. I have two Schwinn bikes and i feel comfortable carrying them together on the rack. There are two exposed bolts on the rack arms from below, be careful not to scrape anything. Also put the heavier bike inside, and put both bicycles in opposite direction so that the front of the first bike meets the back of the other bike. The straps should be very tight and the rack pushed down from the part below the rear wiper as it can seriously damage it if not properly set.

Thule 4002XT Aero Roof Rack Foot Half Pack (Set of 2) Review

Works on my 2004 Toyota Prius, but man, this thing was hard to install the first time. Contrary to the instructions that come with the kit, you really have to get the whole thing assembled (feet, load bars and fit kit) BEFORE placing the rack on the car. If you try to do it while the unit is positioned on the roof of the car, the bolts are not long enough to engage the threaded nut way up inside each foot. Also, stick to the measurements they specify in the instructions. That part they did get right.

Now that I did the intital set up though, the rack is super sturdy, and relatively easy to take on and off. To fit the 2004 Toyota Prius you will need the Thule Fit Kit #2142, a set of the Thule 400xt Aero Feet, and a set of load bars of your desired length (I got the LB58, 58" ones).

Overall a good product, but Thule could do a way better job on their instruction manual.

Special thanks to the Cracks and Racks store in Aspen, Colorado who I had to randomly call for help because the Thule tech support was closed on the weekend. You guys were so helpful and nice even though i hadn't bought the unit from you. cracksandracks.com

Thule Hullavator Review

I've seen many video clips on the net introducing this product (search youTube) so I will skip the functions of it.Lifting my 17' kayak onto my CR-V roof is not something enjoyable, so I bite the bullet.I had to abandoned my factory cross bar and installed the Thule Aero Rapid bars (Thule square and Yakima round will also work but the Aero bar looks much nicer) to accommodate that.This is needed for the load bar to extend 4 to 8 inch beyond the foot, my factory bar will not do that.So after sinking in about $700 I got this going.The installation was not difficult; they even included a DVD with installation instructions. It seems the Hullavator is designed with the square bar in mind.The adaptation to the Aero bars looks like an afterthought.They gave you 4 thin plastic clear films per arm to protect the contact points.A square bar would fit nicely under the mounting bar.But for the Aero bar there were just 4 contact points; I don't even want to tighten the screws too much because of that.

I know before hands that the added height to my CR-V will not clear my garage door; so keep that in mind.The shorter cradle can barely makes it; the bottom taller cradle just simply won't.Now Thule has the Hull-a-port PRO which has a cradle/carrier that will fold, you would think they could have that feature on this $440 product, right?That will sure let me drive my CR-V into my garage without taking it off.The DVD suggest that you take the whole arm assembly off when entering a low clearance garage and states that it is easy.. Ah, it was not that easy, the arms are heavy and putting and removing the pivot pins through the holes can be tricky.I think I will just take the cradles off for now.

Another thing is the Aero bars are nice looking but this Hullavator is not; two big gray boxes without much aero dynamics are sitting on my car roof.. They did pack a lot of mechanisms in there so I guess there is not much room for improvements in that regard.Oh, also be careful not to hit your head, it sticks out just enough to get you. on the other hand it was a good thing that it leave more space on the rack for other things. I moved the front cross bar to in between the front and back doors to avoid it.I can see some other car may not have that choice.

Enough whining I guess the benefits are exceeding the shortcommings so it is a keeper for now.

Thule 846 Quest Rooftop Cargo Bag Review

Wow I thought THULE was THE company for this type of stuff.Boy was I mad after a trip from NJ to SC.The bag was mounted to my roofrack and was a little noisy (top be expected).But when I got to SC and opened the bag....the horror!The inside lining shredded and flaked off on everything! There were also 2 holes along the to seam!What a mess...and I couldn't use the bag on the way home....had to ship my stuff home!I just wrote THULE....we'll see if they come thru for the customer
Sept. 12, 2005 THULE sent me a replacement, an Escape 2.Great customer service....but does this mean the Escape is better?Is the Quest inferior?There was no coorespondence with the repalcement...I'll try it out this summer.

About Thule
To say that Thule's beginnings in the U.S. were humble would be an understatement. Thule 847 Outrigger Kayak Load Assist for Roof Rack Mount Carrier Review

The product certainly does what it claims--making it easier to load a heavy kayak. However the stop which keeps the kayak from sliding sidewards off of the bar is not really that good. It should be taller. My boat slipped off the bar, jumped over the end, and fell, taking the passenger side exterior mirror out. Since then I have to use extra caution such as ensuring the car is parked on really level ground, finding ground with good traction, and lifting with extra control.

Yakima FlipSide 4-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (1.25 and 2-Inch Receiver) Review

This bike rack is finished very nicely with very few exposed nuts and bolts.It comes with anti-sway supports that fold down and attach to the vertical seat post tube on your bike and keep the bike from rocking back and forth while traveling.

It is also very well built but it has a few flaws that are worth mentioning.The integrated locking cable would be handy but it was VERY difficult to stuff back into its storage compartment (located in the vertical support arm) but your mileage may vary.The cable felt like it was longer than its storage space so much pushing and twisting was needed to put it back.

The rack is also very large and VERY heavy, much more so than would appear in the pictures.This could make it a bit awkward to install on your vehicle but it should be very sturdy because it uses a threaded bolt to attach itself to the hitch.

I also noticed that the provided lock for the hitch bolt wouldn't engage if the safety pin was in place.It works fine without the pin but installing the cotter pin doesn't provide enough surface for the lock to grip onto apparently.This could just be a flaw with the one I had so you might have better luck.

I never actually tested this rack with a bike because I wasn't able to install it on my car.The part that goes into the receiver hitch was too long for the hitch on my Honda so the locking bolt holes wouldn't line up.The Thule Ridgeline appears to be very similar to this model (and hopefully has a shorter hitch mount =).

This bike rack works well once it is mounted.The description of the item did not mention that it needed to be mounted on the Thule roof rack adapter.I ordered only the bike rack.I hoped that the rack would mount directly to my Toyota Rav4's factory roof rack.I've since been looking at other factory roof racks, and have noticed that most of them have airplane wing-like bars which go from side to side.These bars are about three inches in width, and the hardware on the Big Mouth Bike Rack is set up to fit the Thule adapter, which has bars little more than an inch in width.Instead of ordering the adapter, I spent a day tooling my own mounting hardware.This gives the bike rack a much cleaner look, and sets the rack and bike closer to the roof, making it easier to load and unload.The second problem is that the end caps come off much too easily.Other than these problems, the rack works well, and is easy to load and unload.

Thule 554XT Hang Two Rooftop Surfboard Carrier Review

Was excited to get this as my crossbars are very close together and lateral stability was key. My board is 11'3" L 29.5" W and over 4" thick. Had everything set up all nice and neat until I tried to get the straps on. Except they are too short to hook on for my board. Don't see how any stand up board or thicker and wider board would fit with the included straps so I was back to standard compression straps. So much for the quick convenience. But the captures are nice and work well. So hopefully Thule will send me some longer straps when they wise up and make them bigger. I did call to complain. If your dimensions are smaller than mine (29.5" w and about 4.5" thick) then you'll be fine. The straps were short by about 2+ inches at their longest.

Thule Criterium Bike Mount Review

I wanted a rack that could directly mount to my Toyota Sienna (2003) and my RAV4 (2006) factory racks- the large clamps on this unit allows for this and provide a solid, stable mount without additional hardware.I also wanted something that didn't require the removal of the front wheel, and this also fit the bill.I was a little skeptical at first because the main mount seems a bit flimsy, but when you lock it down, it works and my bikes remain motionless, even with my bikes which are all 61cm road bikes.The Thule locks are easy to install and provide a small level of protection for when you really need to leave your bike- as with any of the bike rack locks, I wouldn't leave an expensive bike unattended for too long because the locks probably wouldn't slow down a bike thief too much.

I'd definitely recommend these to anyone looking for a rack, especially for those with factory racks with crossbars that this unit will fit.It will save you about $300 in additional hardware.

This Yakima Double-Down 5 bike rack is not all that it is cracked up to be.It swayed terribly.Every time we went over a roughness in the road the whole rack of bikes bounced up and down.Finally, the extender bars were only 26" long.This did NOT accommodate our children's 5 bikes.We could only get 4 bikes on it.After a few weeks of being very frustrated, I took it back to the store and told them that it swayed far too much.I also told them that it did not hold 5 bikes.
While there at the store, I noticed a Yakima King-Pin 5 bike rack.This is the Yakima that preceded the Double-Down.I measured its arms and they were 31" of bike-carrying length.The store allowed me to trade the Double-Down for the King-Pin.
I am so much happier as the King-Pin does not sway at all.It fits much sturdier and solid.Also, I have 5 extra inches of bike carrying length which is what I needed to get that fifth bike on it.
I do not recommend the Double-Down.If you can locate a King-Pin (which may be hard since the Double-Down is replacing it), it will work for you so much better.
Overall, we like the Yakima over other leading brands as the bike cradles come with the rack.With other brands you have to purchase these cradles separately.

Thule 684 Terrapin Hitch Mount Luggage Box Review

I must have shopped 3 months for the best price on this storage box. I really wanted to support the loacal shop here in Denver, Rack Attack, but after repeated attempts to get them to match the before tax price of the Amazon product, I decided to just buy it from Amazon. It was also annoying that if I was willing to pay the extra money for their box that they wanted to charge me an additional amount to have them assemble and install it. In all, I saved about $80 by buying it from Amazon.

I could not have been more happy with the purchase experience. It was delivered as agreed and in perfect condition.

The box itself took about 2 hours to assemble and install. Not very difficult, but certainly time consuming. Also, unless you are okay with semi-heavy lifting, you should probably do this with another person. The box fit perfectly into my 2007 4-Runner hitch. The only problem was that I needed an adapter from 7 pin to 4 pin to get the brake lights to work. I had to buy this from Wal-Mart for $18.

Lastly, after installation, only one of the brake lights was working. After about 20 minutes of inspection, I realized that when I was assebling the box I had accidentally disconnected one of the brake light wire assemblies. It's easy to do if you're not careful...somewhat of a design flaw. Once reconnected, the box worked like a charm.

I am very happy with the purchase and recommend it to anyone looking for a little extra cargo space for road trips.

Yakima SuperJoe 3 Trunk Mount Bike Rack Review

I was originally looking at a Thule rack when my wife up and ordered this one.Therefore, I could'nt help but be a bit skeptical as I opened the box.My skepticism, though, changed to enthusiasm as I inspected the rack's solid construction and ample rubber fasteners.

Getting it on the car (an 03 Focus Hatchback) was no more difficult than any other rack.The first try took about 15 minutes.After that it was a five minute job.

Once on the car it was firmly attached and very stable.It didn't budge.As for the bikes, they did not budge, either.At highway speeds there was no vibration, no shaking, and no unusual noise.

After several trips with the rack and several mountings and unmountings there was no sign of damage or wear either on the bikes or the car.

Using the Yakima is a good experience.

Thule 958 Parkway 2-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (2-Inch Receiver) Review

This product works well, but if you plan to keep your bikes secure you will have to make some changes. First of all, if you build it according to the manufacturer's instructions, your bikes can be stolen easily. This product offers ZERO security, making it useless if you plan to stop somewhere before you take the bikes off the rack. The pin is a joke, the system requires the user to literally bolt the rack to the hitch, which is totally impractical, furthermore anyone with a wrench can steal bothyour bikes and your bike rack. In order to secure the rack to the car, I drilled out the threads making the hole larger so it could accept a lockable pin which would secure the bike rack to our vehicle. Given the thickness of the metal, I had to invest in a $45 drill bit, making thisbike rack much more expensive.

If security is not an issue for you, then by all means this bike rack will work for you, I don't think that the pin that holds the rack to the hitch will hold up, so that part earns a zero on this end. If you plan to leave your bikes un-attended, then this bike rack is not a good buy and I strongly recommend not making the investment.

The Thule Parkway provides you with convenient vehicle access with a carrier that easily tilts down, and fits all types of bikes with a dual-arm design that eliminates the need for top-tube adapters. This bicycle rack features classic Thule cradles made to protect your bike frame while holding your bikes securely, and includes a tie-down strap for even more bike security. The Thule Parkway weighs 30.5 pounds completed, and is constructed with two feet of steel tubing that has been E-coated for extra corrosion resistance, and soft thermo-rubber cradles. The Parkway has a maximum carrying capacity of 70 pounds, and can be upgraded with Thule's 950 Zip Stick for added bike stability and anti-sway functionality. User's should note that this hitch-mount bike rack is designed for, and only fits on, a two-inch receiver.
