Roofbag Explorer 15. Cu. Ft.- WS-n-15-GY Waterproof Car Top Carrier, Gray, For Cars Without a rack Review

Roofbag Explorer 15. Cu. Ft.- WS-n-15-GY Waterproof Car Top Carrier, Gray, For Cars Without a rackThis did exactly what we needed it to do.We purchased this bag for a long road and camping trip in which we had 5 people in a minivan and no room to store camping supplies. We do not have a rack on the minivan, so this bag fit our needs, strapping through the windows in the car securing it that way with two long straps. My passengers were worried at first for the safety of their camping supplies and personal belongings, but after the first few hundred miles of speedy highway driving, it was obvious we had nothing to worry about. It securely held our belongings on the top of the vehicle and we will continue to use this bag for future road trips and camping expeditions.

Product Description:
RoofBag EXPLORER WS-n-15-GY rooftop cargo carriers offer great protection at an economical price. Constructed with a combination of Radio Frequency welding at the top of the carrier and traditional stitching at the front corners and the zipper flap, this car top carrier is recommended when heavy rain is not expected frequently. Even though the EXPLORER cargo carrier uses stitching on the corners and along the zipper flap, water protection is excellent, since any possible moisture wicking through the needle holes is minimized by a double folded, double stitched manufacturing process. The material used in the RoofBag is 18-oz tight-knit polyester fabric, which has been double-coated with vinyl. Besides being totally waterproof, this material is very tough and durable. It is treated to resist the damaging effect of UV rays. It won't fade or deteriorate, even with constant exposure to the sun. (Roofbag also makes an 11 cu. ft. version for smaller cars)

Thule Parkway Hitch Bike Carrier - 4 Bike Review

Thule Parkway Hitch Bike Carrier - 4 BikeHave had my rack 6 months. It is reasonably well made and sturdy.Bikes go on easily. The rubber frame holders work well with my hardtail bikes.A couple of bungees or the included strap should keep your bikes from swinging; you don't need the struts or fancy clamps.

Two problems:first, the locking-bolt hole for the 1-1/2 inch bar is too close to the end, causing the bar not to fit all the way into the receiver (poor design) and making the rack stick out at least 3 inches farther than it should on my car (Subaru Forester). Why not have two holes, like my old Saris rack?I had a machinist drill and tap another hole in the correct position. The Thule customer service (joke!) people would never admit this design flaw, although their website addresses it.

Second, to fold or unfold the crossbars (that the bikes go on), you have to remove/replace a bolt with a nylock nut, requiring 2 wrenches. This should be a tool-free affair with a carriage bolt and a big wingnut.

Thule 962XT Speedway 3-Bike Trunk Rack Review

Thule 962XT Speedway 3-Bike Trunk RackI've used this bike rack for over 10,000 miles across the U.S., on two sedans and one SUV.It's always been secure and rock solid (tried only one bike) at every speed I've driven, ranging from highways to gravel roads in all weather. It is an effective bike carrier and I do recommend it.There are some minor pitfalls though.

The mounting is tricky, with any car.It took me 40 minutes the first time, now I can do it in 15, ensuring everything's good. The documentation isn't terribly clear either because the actual mounting is a nonlinear process. You'll need to factor the rack mounting into your "getting ready" time.Tying up excess length on the straps is troublesome; you'll probably be rolling them up and taping them together. So you'll need tape with this rack.Last, its two screwknobs are easily lost and the product could have well been designed with a better mechanism for adjusting the rack to fit other cars. These are minor though, and the rack does carry a bike quite well.

Things to note about trunk racks in general:
They're easy theft targets; at the end of the day, the canvas straps can be cut and the whole assembly stolen. This is acceptable for driving and stopping along an interstate, but not for sitting in the Ikea lot all day.Mounting the rack also renders the trunk inaccessible, entailing some foresight when loading the car for a multi-stop trip.

Highland 2005200 48" Black Universal Car Top Bar Carrier Review

Highland 2005200 48' Black Universal Car Top Bar CarrierI used this to haul a 75-pound, 74-inch-long flat-pack furniture box about 100 miles on top of a 1994 Toyota Camry, and it worked just fine. I had my doubts when I bought it. I lost an upholstered chair on the Washington, DC Beltway once -- tied it down with rope and it took off like a kite. But this Highland carrier did the job. When putting it together, save yourself some aggravation and loop the straps through the plastic bases BEFORE you attach the bases to the crossbars (the instructions tell you to do the reverse, which makes the threading next to impossible). The pieces attached firmly to the roof of my Camry, with flat metal hooks going on the sills of the open doors. Once the doors are closed there's no way the hooks can come out. Make sure the straps are tight before you close the doors. This can be a little tricky as there seemed to be some slippage through the buckles, but with a little tugging and wiggling they snugged up pretty well. Note that the rubber feet that fit on the plastic bases provide grip and protect your roof when the carrier is on, but they fall off easily when it's not in use. I don't know why they weren't permenently attached. The maximum recommended load is 150 pounds but I didn't test it to the limit -- the crossbars look sturdy but they're hollow metal tubes, and they bounced a little under the weight of the box. Also, the bars have a textured finish but seemed a little slippery, so I wrapped some gritty no-slip tape around them (the kind used on stairsteps) to prevent any slippage. I attached the box to the carrier with two ratchet tie-downs (highly recommended over rope). The tie-down straps were looped once around the box and under each crossbar and the box didn't budge the whole trip home. One other thing, make sure to tie up any dangling straps -- the sound of them whacking against the roof of your car can be very disconcerting. An inexpensive solution that's good for temporary use with light loads on short trips in cars that don't have roof racks.

Update: Used the carrier to haul two of the same box on the Camry, bringing the load right up to the 150-lb maximum -- rock solid all the way. I laid the long boxes side-by-side with the longest width down to spread out the weight as much as possible, then duct-taped them together and fastened them down good and tight with tie-downs and rope (Overkill? perhaps, but better safe than sorry and sued.) My next car will probably be a small SUV, but until then I'm glad I have this carrier. Inexpensive, easy to use and remove and does the job.

Highland 10391 Kar Pak Rainproof Soft-Sided Car Top Carrier - 15 Cubic Feet Review

Highland 10391 Kar Pak Rainproof Soft-Sided Car Top Carrier - 15 Cubic FeetWe've had the Highland Kar-Pak since our first family trip to Disney World in 2002, and we've used it many a times since: trips to Disney World, trips to Gulf Shores, a few visits to Texas and, the big one, our evacuation from New Orleans a few days before Hurricane Katrina struck. Not to be overly glowing, but this thing helped us save a lot more since we could cram it full.

It holds a bundle, stores quickly, cleans up easily (bug splatter is no match for scrub brush & water, eh), is arguably leak-proof (never had a problem even through the worst rains), and attaches easily and securely (and not to dismiss another person's review/opinion, but the carrier box clearly stated "Roof Rack Mount"; however, I can see confusion with roof rack and roof bars -- those bars on the roof when you get the van/suv/etc are just styling until you add a cross-bar).

My wife came across this model locally in N.O. when we were searching for something for the roof to carry luggage on our first real driving vacation. We had looked at a lot of the hard-side ones, which were all extremely expensive and sorely lacking in capacity. She found this and we thought it might be a quick-fix but we've used it ever since and have no plans to replace it.

FWIW, a tip: get some big safety pins. Though you can tie the excess strap up it's easier to use a safety pin to pin up the excess. You don't have to, but the excess strap tends to flap in the wind and will drive you a little batty.

WeatherTech 60001 RackSack Cargo Carrier Review

WeatherTech 60001 RackSack Cargo CarrierI like WeatherTech products, so when I saw this one, I decided to buy it, and stop searching all the other choices.I like the WeatherTech Company, and they have a REP for perfect products!

After a trip from Ohio to South Florida and back, I felt I knew enough about it to review it and give some general info.So this is based on ONE long trip in the rain... (I am a retired truck driver, so have some knowledge in this area)

First, it's well made, it has it's own storage bag that yes, it really will fit back into!

Got the usual great Amazon service!Fast delivery, no damage, and lowest price I could find!

Soft or Hard - which to choose?
Here's my thinking on the subject:Hard is better, but much more expensive, and takes much more room to store when not in use.Since this is not an item I will use more than 2-3 times per year, cost and storage are big factors to me.If I were to use it more often, then a hard Carrier would do the job much better.OK - Soft, now why this one?
As I said at the top, I like the Company, and knew the product would be of great quality.I was right, heavy material, double seams everywhere, strong zipper, great attachment system!

A few things I learned during the study and search for this; if your roof rack has cross rails - you need to measure the space between them, or make sure they can be removed - if not, you will have to go to a hard Carrier!Because this is some 30+ inches long, you want this to sit on the roof itself, NOT on any cross-rails!On my 06 Tucson, there is only 21' between the rails, and it was a chore to remove them (on my Tucson, the cross-rails are meant to not be moved, and they had some extra parts built up around the rails that had to be removed first). So scope all this out first regardless of which soft Carrier you buy!

I do not believe that any brand of soft Carrier would be truly water-proof, so get past that, and plan for some dampness - that was my thinking! The racksack uses a "rubber-backed" type material (PVC, etc), but water *could* come in through the seams, or around the zipper. So, I simply used garbage bags around what we were worried about.

The straps can be used on the front and back, or on the sides - since I had removed my cross rails, I could only attach on the sides.YES, it's a pain to load - I am 6' tall - but not tall enough - so a ladder, or stand on the door edge in the open door, or, load on the ground and heave it onto the roof---not an easy way to do it.And NO, it must be unloaded at night for those of you on long trips as there is no way to lock it, another reason for a[...] hard shell lockable Carrier - But, I knew this when I bought it, just bringing up "gotcha's" that others may not have thought of.

Anyhow, the straps work very well! The buckles hold well, and I felt no need for any extra straps (hindsight proved me correct as well) - remember, loose strap ends will do damage if they flap going down the road! The racksack uses this neat velcro way of rolling the end, and self-tying the ends so they do not flap.If not, or if it does not work for you, simply tuck the ends under the bag - just make sure they do not flap.

Gas mileage will go down when at speed. If loaded properly, there is not much extra noise, but at freeway speeds, a drop in MPG is a real possibility - regardless of which bag/Carrier you get.

On my small SUV (Tucson) driving at 65-70 on the cruise control I normally get 22-23MPG, the best I did with the bag was 19.8MPG - so in my case, the drop was rather considerable! This is more a issue of the vehical than the type of bag used.On my car, I would get roughly the same drop regardless of which Carrier bought (the exception might be some of the streamlined hard Carriers).

To sum it up, I like the product, it worked well for me, and the luxury of being able to bring items on the car trip that I could not have taken without the bag was a good trade-off for the loading hassles and the lower MPG - so, this is both a review and recomendation of the 'Racksack' - and a how-to in general for roof top carriers.

If you'd like more info on the Racksack, Google the Company name and go to their website - lots of images and info on the product.Very good product for the price - was roughly 50% cheaper at Amazon too!

I hope this helps!
