Yakima Bedhead or Bedhead Locking Review

Yakima Bedhead or Bedhead LockingI'm gonna make this short - it's a little difficult to mount securely to some rails, particularly if you have a bed liner.Second, they're a little on the expensive side.My recommendation - buy some cheap traps, and mount them to a board.Use a cable lock to secure your bikes. And, it will keep your bikes down out of the road bugs.

Rocky Mounts Lariat SLX, Black, Mountain Bike Fork Mount Bike Tray for Thule or Yakima Racks Review

Rocky Mounts Lariat SLX, Black, Mountain Bike Fork Mount Bike Tray for Thule or Yakima RacksI got this rack for a third bike on my roof rack. I have two velo vise Thules and I can tell you that the Thule is much better product but it comes at twice the cost of the Rocky mounts. I especially dont like the mounting hardware which is not easily removed compared to the Thule product. The hardware also appears to be of lower quality material (I hope it doesnt rust). If you want a cheap solution then get this...otherwise spend the extra bucks for the better product..Thule.

Thule Doubletrack 2 Bike Hitch Carrier Review

Thule Doubletrack 2 Bike Hitch CarrierMy vehicle is a 1999 Nissan Maxima sedan, equipped with a Kurt 1-1/4" hitch receiver. Due to the toung weight limit of the hitch receiver, the choice of bike racks is also limited. Thanks God, the THULE 990 is a great solution for me.

Originally, I doubt the capability of an 1-1/4" hitch to bear heavy loads (rack + bikes). After I installed THULE 990 and loaded two bikes, I was so glad that I chose a correct rack. The play was very very small, no matter my car was stopped, on local roads or on the freeway. The rack provides three points to contact to each bike. It is an excellent way to carry bikes. No need to worry about that the bikes would scratch my car or scratch each other.

For the rack itself, the height is pretty easy for me to load bikes. I do not have to lift my bikes too much. Also the rack provides sufficient clearance to access rear trunk and let trunk lid open without any interferences.

For entering/exiting my drive way, THULE 990 provides sufficient vertical clearance so that I could drive in/out drive way without further awareness.

For local road driving, all I need to be aware are the speed bumps. Just drive nice and slowly. Otherwise, the bikes/rack are rock-solid.

For freeway driving, I drove my vehicle at 70mph and the bikes/rack were pretty stable. I could not feel any play or vibration. But the aerodynamic drag is a little bit noticeable. By the way the test drive on freeway was about 20 miles one-way, 40 miles total.

The integrated lock heads are also a great advantage. No need to use additional ugly and bulky locking cables. The two locks on the locking handles are easy to use and efficient. The STL2 hitch lock is also easy to use and very tight fitted.

With THULE 990, I could virtually extend my bicycle rides to anywhere my vehicle could reach. The THULE 990 is really a great bike rack.

The independent adjustable wheel hoops accommodate bikes with wheel bases up to 48 inches and eliminates handlebar to seat contact. The Stinger Swinger universal hitch connection makes it easy to attach to your vehicle, quickly converting from 2-inch to 1-1/4-inch right out of the box. The Hitch Switch quick release lever provides rapid storage when not in use. It carries up to two bikes weighing a maximum of 70 pounds.

About Thule
To say that Thule's beginnings in the U.S. were humble would be an understatement. Founding member Ake Skeppner sold products at windsurf competitions on the New England shoreline, exhibited the product line at a number of different trade shows, and even canvassed local retailers in the greater New York area, all from his "office"--a now-famous station wagon. Initial success was found in the small but growing sport of windsurfing where a strong, reliable roof rack was an indispensable piece of equipment. This was quickly followed by success in the ski business where Thule's Swedish heritage certainly helped the product gain rapid acceptance.
By the mid-1980s, the company sold products directly to ski and windsurfing shops but sold through distributors to address the large and growing bike business. A risky decision was made to terminate these distributor relationships and sell direct to retailers through a network of independent sales representatives. Much of the company's market success today can be traced to that decision. Shortly after, Ake hired an engineer and set up a small assembly plant in Elmsford, New York in order to design and manufacture bike carriers that would offer the features demanded by the U.S. consumer and compete effectively with other racks on the market.
The company has since grown rapidly through product innovation, a commitment to quality, and the continuance of a strong entrepreneurial spirit as well as continuing to evolve their products to meet the needs of users.

Thule TTEO-1 Black Electronics Organizer Review

Thule TTEO-1 Black Electronics OrganizerThis is a well-made and good-looking product, but it is much too small for its intended purpose (holding small electronics and sunglasses. One reason is that the insert with sand that holds it down is (bizarrely!) placed within the organizer, not outside of it, and it takes up more than half of the available internal space. After placing my clip-on sunglasses in the organizer, there was no room for anything else.It is large enough for one small electonics device, or one pair of sunglasses, and that's all.To make it capable of accommodating several electronic devices and a pair of sunglasses, the following changes would be needed:Move the sand compartment to the outside, increase the width of the organizer to about twice its current width, and add an internal fabric divider to separate the sunglasses from devices that might scratch them.

Yakima HoldUp Bike Rack - 2-Inch Review

Yakima HoldUp Bike Rack - 2 inchThis rack is heavy, which is good and bad. Good because it is solid and holds the bikes very firmly. Bad because its a beast to lift on and off the car. And that is without the two bike extension.

The hitch pin is unique and I have grown to like it very much. It is treaded half way and it screws into the part of the rack that goes into the hitch. This causes the rack to be pulled against one side of the hitch on the inside and the end result is that it is firmly attached to the car. With a standard hitch pin that is not threaded and uses a cotter pin the rack can rattle around in the hitch and this is eliminated with the new design. You do have to use a wrench though to mount the rack.I bought a wrench to keep in my car just for this purpose.

This rack is large for the number of bikes it holds. Again, this is good and bad. When I mount bikes on this rack none of them ever touch each other. Even better than that the only place the rack contacts the bike is on the rear rim (using a standard Yakima wheel strap) and the rubber surfaces of the tires. Very nice for people like me who are picky about their bikes and don't want them damaged on the rack.

I consider this rack to be expensive. At $359.10 for only two bikes it's up there. And then another $234.00 to add another two bikes! And I can only image how heavy it will be with the extension attached.

The cable lock that comes with the rack has a loop on one end and a lock on the other. The lock is meant to go and the hitch pin to lock the rack to the car and secure the bikes at the same time. The problem is that the lock is very hard to unlock once it is attached to the hitch pin on my 2008 Sequoia. The geometry is such that you have to insert the key into the cable's lock blind in a very small space. And of course the cable comes with a lock core and its not going to use the same key as the rest of your gear so buying a replacement matching lock core is another expense.

There is a separate lock pin provided on the rack which works nicely and is much easier to unlock the cable from but now the rack is not locked to you car. To solve this I bought Yakima's stand alone hitch pin lock straight from them and they were nice enough to load it with my standard lock core so I didn't have to buy even another core.

The cable that comes with the rack works nicely but is JUST long enough to lock two bikes to the rack if you go around all four wheels and both frames. Can't tell from Amazon's info if you get another cable lock if your buy the two bike addition for this rack. Even if you do there is another core to buy, if you're like me and you want all your gear to work with one key.

When I first received the hitch and put it together, which is very simple and easy, I did put the two bike trays on backwards. They worked like that but after using the rack like that I could tell it would be better if the two trays were reversed. I did that and the spacing worked much better. Its tough to tell for sure which way they should go from the manual so lay everything out and look at the pictures very carefully.

The Yakima website says that you can put a bike on this rack in 10 seconds or less. This may actually be possible if you are only including mounting the bike. I timed myself several time and it usually takes about 20 seconds working at a normal rate. This does not include getting the arms and straps ready or threading and attaching the locking cable. I would say that from a folded up position (the rack can fold up vertically when no bikes are mounted) to two bikes mounted and locked can easily be done in two minutes.

I have four Yakima LockJaw bike mounts (the old version of the type where you don't have to remove any wheels) that mount on top of a vehicle. Compared to heaving your bike over your head, climbing your running boards and rear wheel and then trying to mount it on top of a huge SUV this rack is a dream.

The only reason I did not give this rack five stars is the price. At $593.10 for four bikes, not including any extra cores or locks your may want, its getting pretty steep. For me though I feel it was money well spent for the two bikes and I fully inted to buy the extra two bike add on eventually.

EDIT 12/5/2008 - When I checked out my Amazon wish list today the two bike add on for this rack was priced at $145.34.This is a price drop of $88.66 from when I wrote this review a few days ago.Needless to say I hit the 1-Click button before it could go back up so I should have the add on to review in a few days.I'll add to my review once I've had a chance to try it out.The main thing I am worried about is stability. Its a pretty big contraption with the add on (there are pictures on the Yakima web site) but that's what keeps the bikes apart so I guess I can't complain.

EDIT 4/8/2009 - I have now used the two bike extension several times and it works great.Just understand that it extends a long way off the back of the car.The extension comes with a very nice red flag that bolts on to the back of the rack along with two battery operated red biking lights (the kind you put rear facing on your seat post that can flash or do other patterns) that you attach to the back of the rack for night driving.I can attach the first part and then the second part to my car myself but the whole thing put together is to big and to heavy to do by myself. The two bike extension attaches to the main part using a bolt that requires a wrench and it is not the same size as the hitch pin so a second wrench or socket is required.Overall I love this rack (now that paying for it is in the past).

Yakima Hold-Up 1.25 in Review

Yakima Hold-Up 1.25 inIf you get a hitch installed on your car, you can't do better than the Yakima Hitch Rack.Easy to install, but you'll need the proper size ratchet wrench, to attach the rack to the hitch securely. But other than that, it's simple installation, and once it's on the car, it folds up so it hardly takes any room.Since the rack screws into the hitch, it's not as easy to remove from the car as some other racks. But that's why this rack is very secure. It's a great bike rack because it holds two bikes securely and won't scratch the back of your car.You can even open the car hood without removing the bikes. If you want a bike rack for your car, this is the best.Takes a few seconds to load and remove a bike rack.I recommend the Yakima Hitch Lock as well even though it does come with a cable hitch lock, but that's bulky when you're not holding your bikes.Make sure you're buying the 2009 model (check model number). Some places sell an older version which is not as good.

Yakima Landing Pad Base for Yakima Control Towers (7) Review

Yakima Landing Pad Base for Yakima Control TowersInstall is bit of a slog, but that's same for any rack mount on the CRV.You have to work the nuts on and off the threaded studs on the vehicle roof to clear off the paint on them. Then after putting the landing pad on tightening the nuts is pretty stiff with the allen wrench provided. They look good though and have a nice cover for when towers/bars are not in use.Towers snap right in and are solid.

Yakima Rr Tracks Review

Yakima Rr TracksThis results in a much nicer rack set-up than raingutter or door mount. It's a more permanent solution, yet the tracks aren't that noticeable once the rack is removed (which is quick and simple). These tracks are more flexible and have better attachment hardware that cheaper alternatives (plusnuts vs. screws). To be fair, Thule also seems good.I was nervous about drilling holes in the roof, but it wasn't that bad.You do need to follow instructions carefully, and realize that recommended hole locations aren't available for all vehicles (I found out that right over the door column isn't the best choice).A depth limiter (other than tape on the bit) is important, and a drill guide (to keep the bit from sliding and perpendicular) would be helpful.Even with an indentation from a punch, the bit still can slide. The end result - a 3000 mile trip with a fully loaded hardshell cartop carrier, no leaks, and completely solid. I'm very pleased with these tracks, and with Yakima customer service.

Thule Nomad Cargo Bag Review

Thule Nomad Cargo BagI expected much better quality from Thule. As used according to the manufacturers recomendations, this bag did not even last one trip from New York to Chicago without it's interior lining cracking and completely flaking off. In addition, the back of the bag ripped creating two large holes in the fabric and the zipper attachments became loose and proceeded to pound at the roof of my car. The contents shifted continually during travel making for a loud noise that's not unlike a pouring rain hitting the top of the car. This becomes a terrible distraction while driving. All in all I had a very bad experience with this product and would not reccomend it. Opt for one of the solid constuction type carriers, they cost much more, but are worth every penny. In the end I thought I was saving money with this product but wound up having to purchase a Sears X-Cargo container to replace it for my return trip back.

I bought one for my Mazda 3 and have use it, along with a Yakima roof rack for 2 cross country ski trips (I live a Florida, skiing is far away). The rack hasn't shifted an inch and was relatively easy to install. Yakima has a product guide on their site to make sure you order the right pieces for your model car.

Thule 400 XT- Aero Foot Pack Review

Thule 400 XT- Aero Foot PackI just installed the Thule 400XT rack -- the original estimate of half an hour though was greatly off the mark.It took me about 2 and a half hours to install the first time. However, one I learned from my mistakes, it was a lot easier to install.
The general difficulty I had was very fine tolerance the parts have in attaching them to my '01 Prius. For example, I had to load bars initially upside down (grip side down) which made a big difference in trying to do the initial lock with the tensioning cam (still required a lot of force though). Also, there was little extra leeway on the screws to attach the fit kit to the feet.Lastly, setting the final tabs in place took a while until I realized I could just get a plastic card and push them in while shutting the assembly. After all these hickups, I know how to set it up a lot faster.Othewise, solid construction and it doesn't look like it will move anytime soon.

Yakima Boa Bike Rack Review

Yakima Boa Bike RackBefore buying this mount, measure the distance between your bike's fork dropouts to the rear wheel. Then look at the recommended crossbar spacing for your vehicle in the Yakima Q Clip instruction booklet. If the measurements are not similar (ie. rear wheel not centered over the rear crossbar, short roofline and long wheelbase bike), then the rear wheel will hang far behind the rear crossbar and there's a good chance that the rear towers will shift forward when transporting your bike. This can result in roof damage from the shifting clips and the bike's rear wheel contacting and scratching the roof.

The Boa is Yakima's most economical rooftop bike mount and it shows. If you live in a low crime neighborhood and remove your bike and rack when you are away from your car, this mount will probably work just fine for you. Or if you absolutely need to minimize the footprint of the rack when it's off your vehicle.

The Boa pod is mostly made of glass-filled polymer. There is a flimsy plastic cover that is secured by the skewer and covers the heads of the 3 hex mounting bolts. Unfortunately, even when locked, this cover can easily be pried and cracked open by hand revealing the 3 bolt heads. I complained and Yakima responded that they only provide theft deterrence and cannot guarantee against theft. This does not even approach deterrence.

The Boa mount comes with Yakima's universal locking skewer with a polymer lever, stainless rod, and round steel nut. If the skewer is closed and locked but the handle is in the wrong orientation and there's insufficient tension, then it's a simple matter to rotate the handle counterclockwise to loosen the nut and steal your bike. The lever and cam are plastic and will deform and wear with use. When no bike is loaded, the only way to secure the mount is to tighten the nut further and then close and lock the skewer. However, adjusting the nut defeats the purpose of providing a long-throw skewer.

Adding a long tray converts the mount into a Copperhead mount. However, given the security concerns, I returned this mount and purchased a Yakima Steelhead mount instead. The Steelhead has a clamshell clamping design and is mostly metal. It comes with a stainless metal skewer that has a special locking pin and e-clip on the nut. When the skewer is locked, the clamshell cannot open and the skewer nut cannot be removed even if it is not tightened and tensioned against the mount body. As with the Boa, make sure that the skewer lever rests against the crossbar when locked so that it can only be turned clockwise tightening (and not loosening) the nut.

If you don't want to spend much more than the cost of the Boa but want to use your SKS lock cores, consider purchasing a Steelhead body (new or used) and a Rocky Mounts Lariat tray. You will need to drill a hole in the tray to mount the Yakima head. The Rocky Mounts crossbar mount is compatible with Yakima's round bars and comes with all hardware, and their wheel strap is also less expensive than Yakima's.

If you are using or considering Yakima Q Towers, I have a separate review of that product on Amazon.

Thule 368 SAAB, Toyota Complete Raingutter Car Roof Rack Review

Thule 368 SAAB, Toyota Complete Raingutter Car Roof RackI received the item promptly. It was not as advertised; it was a partial rack (only the "feet"); I ordered the holders and rails separately. The #368 was not for my car(2009 Toyota Carolla); the seller exchanged it for #369; it still doesn't fit my car. I now have over $200 worth of rack that I can't use.

Thule Fit Kit Car Rack Review

Thule Fit Kit Car RackI bought this fit kit for a 2008 Scion xB (just saying that because it's possible that it fits other cars). Anyway, the kit works, it's strong and I have no doubts about it's ability to do its job.

However, the weather strip on the doors sticks out kind of funny. For me, it's more pronounced and awkward on the rear door than front. It may be unavoidable but it's awkward. Also, this is my first Thule rack and I'm extremely disappointed in the instructions. The Aero Foot instructions say the bars should be 28" apart, the fit kit instructions say 26". That's just silly. Mine are more like 38" apart, though I suppose that would depend on the type of load you want to carry, in my case, surfboards.

The fit kit tells you how far apart the aero feet should be (47 1/4" for the front, 47 5/8" for the rear). This just is not correct. If you do this, you end up needing a ridiculous amount of force to properly tighten the feet. Give yourself and extra 1/2-3/4 of an inch.

Another disappointment, and I add it to this review because a better design fit kit could fix this, is the angle that the aero foot sits at. It just looks silly with the plastic shell that comes with the foot. The bottom of the shell wants to be parallel to the ground, while the base of the foot has to fit the contour of the roof. Silly. A longer fit kit could allow the angle of the bottom of the aero foot to be less, making it a closer match to the bottom of the shell. It's the "aero"dynamic shell that makes the aero foot, aero.

It's worth noting that the fit kit has two different sized brackets, the smaller for the front, the larger for the rear.

Now that I have my kit on, I have no questions about the strength of it. I fully trust it but boy was it a bear to get on. In the end, you're only other option is to go with a non-Thule brand or a universal mount and drill into the roof.

Thule RB53 Rapid Aero Aluminum Roof Rack Load Bars (53-Inch, Set of 2) Review

Thule RB53 Rapid Aero Aluminum Roof Rack Load BarsBars are sleek, light, strong, and look good. However, they come without the end caps, which are part of a separate "fit kit". Endcaps are another $10+. It's like getting a pair of sneakers without the laces.
